It was time to upgrade my little monkey’s car seat and the first place I looked to was Britax. We needed a highback booster seat, one that included a 5 point harness, provided comfort and all of the safety features that I look for in a car seat. The car seat of choice was the Britax Frontier 85 SICT.
Andrew is 4 and though he was ready to upgrade to a newer car seat, he wasn’t ready to move out of the 5 point harness. I’m not sure when I will feel comfortable about moving my monkey into a seat belt, for now the harness is the safest option and I love that the Britax Frontier 85 SICT car seat will allow him to safely stay in a harness until he reaches 85 pounds.
After using this car seat for a month, I’m really wishing that Andrea could move into one as well. Andrea is 19 months and weighs about 22 Lbs, the Britax Frontier 85 SICT car seat will accommodate children of at least 25 Lbs and 2 Years old so this is great that it won’t be long before I can upgrade her seat as well.
The longevity of the Britax Frontier 85 SICT is a great feature and makes this car seat attractive to me. When my children reach 40 pounds, the Britax Frontier 85 SICT can be used as a Booster seat all the way up to 120 pounds.
Andrew asked for me to mention his favorite feature of the Britax Frontier 85 SICT, this would be the included cup holders aka “cubby holes” as my son calls them. He can easily place his drink on one side and his “phone, keys and cars” on the other side. I love that the cup holders are easy to clean, within arms reach and fit most cup sizes available.
When the Britax Frontier 85 SICT car seat arrived at my doorstep, my eyebrows raised high. This car seat is BIG and HEAVY! While I couldn’t imagine dragging this car seat through the airport, weighing in at 22 pounds, I was very excited to install it into our car. There is a definite strong feel to this car seat that gives me confidence that my children will be protected in a crash.
I own a 7 seat Toyota Sienna and installed the Britax Frontier 85 SICT onto a chair in the second row. We used the latch system and top tether with no problems at all. I love that Britax uses a push button on the latch connectors making it easier to open and release the hooks.
This car seat is big, I measured about 24.5” across from cushion to cushion, and I wondered how this would fit into my car. We had a tight snug fit of the installed Britax Frontier 85 SICT car seat and it worked best when the chair arm rests were raised up.
I’m more than okay with the width of the car seat as I have the security knowing that my child will be protected by the side impact cushion technology (SICT). The SICT works to absorb the incoming crash force, expelling air through the strategically placed vents, and transferring the crash force energy away from the child.
The result?
A 45% reduction in side impact crash energy.
When I first saw these guards on the harness straps, honestly I didn’t know what they did. This isn’t something you see on every car seat and now wish that I did!
The harness ultra guard system works to provide resistance and reduce forward movement of your child in the event of a crash. The rubber guards grip your child and the harness and cause friction against the child as they move forward.
To address a few concerns of other reviewers:
Before using the Britax Frontier 85 SICT car seat I read reviews that talk about the removable cover coming loose. Britax has created a cover that can easily be removed without having to remove the car seat from your car. To do this, there are loops that connect over the base of the car seat. This is great!
Others have reported on Amazon that they have experienced a problem with the cover coming loose. I’ve been using this car seat for a month now, on a daily basis, and have not experienced this problem.
The cover is soft in my opinion and I love the colors. The Onyx patterned material gives the Britax Frontier 85 SICT a classy feel and would look nice in any car.
My Overall Thoughts:
I absolutely LOVE the Britax Frontier 85 SICT and feel that it is worth every penny. My son loves riding in his new seat and I really want to upgrade my daughters convertible car seat after seeing the amount of protection that the Britax Frontier 85 SICT provides. When she is big enough I will purchase another one in a heart beat.
